A silver service star or bar is awarded for one year of service; a gold service star or bar for two; two gold stars or bars for between three years and five; and three gold stars or bars for more than five years service.

What is the Inter-American Defense Board Medal Decoration?

The The Inter-American Defense Board (IADB) was created in 1942 by foreign ministers of 21 states, in the middle of World War II. It is considered to be the oldest existing defense organization in the world. The IADB are made up of nationally appointed defense officials who have developed approaches, methods and strategies on defense and security issues facing countries in North, Central, and South America. Currently, the IADB has 28 Member States and its structure is composed of the Council of Delegates, the Secretariat and the Inter-American Defense College. The organization brings together civilian and military representatives of various American countries with a specific purpose in military and defense. The IADB provides technical, educational, and consultancy services on issues related to military and defense in the region in order to contribute to the fulfillment of the OAS. The IADB Medal is an international decoration presented by the IADB to any military officers who completes a tour of service with the IADB while serving within a member nation of the OAS. Military personnels who completed the instructor tour at the Inter-American Defense College or served on staff for the IADB Chairman or Secretariat are also eligible for this award. In the United States, the Inter-American Defense Board Medal was first authorized for branch military members in May 1981.
