Chief Warrant Officer 2 (CW2) is the second lowest Warrant Officer rank in the Unites States Marine Corps. They are officially appointed by the the Secretary of the Marine Corps. They are intermediate level experts of both the technical and tactical aspects of leading in their field. Responsibilities of a Chief Warrant Officer 2 are ones that would typically call for the authority of a commissioned officer but require also the intricate technical abilities and experience a commissioned officer would not have has the opportunity to achieve. A Chief Warrant Officer 2 is most often promoted from Warrant Officer 1 (WO1), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience.
W-1s are all but guaranteed to promote to full W-2 roughly two years after their Warranting date. Exceptions include Warrants who have received Non-Judicial Punishment for a serious offense such as a DUI.
