How to get promoted to First Lieutenant Army Promotion to O-2 First Lieutenant

A First Lieutenant is a Commissioned Officer in the United States Army at DoD paygrade O-2. This page describes how the Army determines who is eligible for the promotion list to First Lieutenant.

First lieutenants, while all promoted to this rank from second lieutenant in the same time frame, meet a set of requirements in order to receive this promotion. These include time spent as a platoon leader, time spent as a staff officer, minimum eighteen months of time in grade, achievement of the standard in physical fitness tests, and finally no legal or moral issues.

The rank of first lieutenant sees the difference in experience apparent in second lieutenants (as a result of the different commissioning sources) even out significantly, thus making the competition for the rank of Captain much more based on merit.
