The Southwest Asia Service Medal is a military award of the United States Armed Forces to recognize military service members who performed duty during the years of the Persian Gulf War. Individuals awarded the Southwest Asia Service Medal must have participated in Southwest Asia between August of 1990 to November of 1995. That period of inclusion includes participation in Operations Desert Shield or Desert Storm within the following countries: Iraq,Kuwait,Saudi Arabia,Oman,Bahrain,Qatar,United Arab Emirates,Persian Gulf,Red Sea,Gulf of Oman,Gulf of Aden, and portions of the Arabian Sea that lies north of 10 degrees North latitude and west of 68 degrees East longitude.

The Stolen Valor Act of 2013 is a federal law that makes it illegal for any person to falsely claim to be the recipient of certain military awards, "with the intention of obtaining money, property, or other tangible benefit by convincing another that he or she received the award".This decoration is covered by the Stolen Valor act. Fraudulently claiming to have received a Southwest Asia Service Medal can result in punishment including a fine, imprisonment for not more than one year, or both
