The Air Force Special Duty Ribbon is the replacement for the Air Force Recruiter and Air Force Military Training Instructor ribbons to encompass more AFSCs. This ribbon though is not able to be retroactively awarded. The AFSCs that the ribbons now cover are: Training Instructor in core AFSC (T-prefix),Commander, Cadet Squadron, USAFA (80C0),Training Commander, OTS (81C0),Instructor (81T0),Academic ProgramManager (82A00),Career Assistance Advisor (8A100),Military Training Instructor (8B000),Military Training Leader (8B100),USAFA MilitaryTraining (8B200),Airman and Family Readiness Center NCO (8C000),First Sergeant (8F000),Honor Guard (85G and 8G000),Recruiter (83R and 8R000), and Professional Military Education (PME) Instructor (8T000). The ribbon is awarded for successful completion of a period serving in one of the career fields.

The Stolen Valor Act of 2013 is a federal law that makes it illegal for any person to falsely claim to be the recipient of certain military awards, "with the intention of obtaining money, property, or other tangible benefit by convincing another that he or she received the award".This decoration is covered by the Stolen Valor act. Fraudulently claiming to have received a Air Force Special Duty Ribbon can result in punishment including a fine, imprisonment for not more than one year, or both
