The insignia of the Order is a five point white enameled star, edged with golden silver, seated on a crown and surmounted by a garland. Both are made of leaves of tobacco and coffee; in the center, in a sky blue field, the Constellation of the Southern Cross, enameled in white and, in the circumference, in dark blue circle, the legend "Benemerentium Premium", in burnished gold. On the back the effigy of the Republic, in gold, with the caption “Federative Republic of Brazil”

It is awarded by Presidential Decree as an act of foreign relation between other nations. Being awarded the Order is considered to be the highest honor awarded to foreign citizens by the Brazilian nation. The Order is comprises of five award classes (Ascending Rank): Knight, Officer, Commander, Grand Officer, Grand Cross, and Grand Officer. The Council of the Order is composed of the President of Brazil, the State Ministers of Foreign Affairs, the Secretary General of Foreign Affairs, and the State Minister of Defense. The President of Brazil is positioned as the Grand Master while the Minister of Foreign Affairs is positioned as the Chancellor of the Order. To mention a few individuals who received the Order of the Southern Cross are David Rockefeller (United States), Che Guevara (Cuba), Queen Elizabeth II (United Kingdom), President Nicolas Sarkozy (France).

The Stolen Valor Act of 2013 is a federal law that makes it illegal for any person to falsely claim to be the recipient of certain military awards, "with the intention of obtaining money, property, or other tangible benefit by convincing another that he or she received the award".This decoration is covered by the Stolen Valor act. Fraudulently claiming to have received a Order of the Southern Cross (Brazil) can result in punishment including a fine, imprisonment for not more than one year, or both
