The Marksmanship Ribbon is a United States Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard award that is issued to its members who pass a weapons qualification course and achieve an above-average score. The Coast Guard Rifle Marksmanship ribbon is awarded to personnel who qualify at the Marksman level over a course of fire prescribed by regulations. The current qualifying rifles are the M16A2, M4 or the M14-T. Qualifying must be performed using the current qualifying rifles and under challenges such as time limits, firing positions, and limited number of rounds. Marksmanship Ribbons without devices attached is considered to be the lowest within the category level.

The Stolen Valor Act of 2013 is a federal law that makes it illegal for any person to falsely claim to be the recipient of certain military awards, "with the intention of obtaining money, property, or other tangible benefit by convincing another that he or she received the award".This decoration is covered by the Stolen Valor act. Fraudulently claiming to have received a Coast Guard Rifle Marksmanship Ribbon can result in punishment including a fine, imprisonment for not more than one year, or both
